The funny thing about kids is that they never give you the satisfaction to let you know they have understood a lesson after being told off. But afterwards they behave in a a way that shows they were listening after all.
So maybe we shouldn't expect them to nod and be penitent, just let them go and rest assured (or maybe hope) they will take the lesson on board. Although sometimes an apology would be nice!
